The Importance of Security Features in Your Home’s Entrance Doors

Aluminium Patio Door

Most burglars look for the easiest way into a home, and more often than not, that means trying the front door. If it’s old, weak or poorly secured, it becomes an easy target. But considering that most intruders give up if they can’t get inside within a couple of minutes, a strong, secure entrance door can make all the difference.

What Makes a Front Door Secure?

Whether you’re upgrading for added protection or simply looking to replace an outdated door, understanding what makes an entrance door secure is the first step to keeping your home safe.

Solid Core Construction

A door with a solid composition of timber or steel is far more resistant to forced entry than a hollow one. At Majestic Designs, we manufacture our own range of composite doors with a solid timber core, designed to withstand impact and deter intruders. We’re also an official installer of Endurance composite doors, which are 10% thicker than most on the market.

Endurance composite doors are also accredited by Secured by Design, the UK’s official police initiative for security standards. This means they have been rigorously tested against common burglary methods, offering one of the highest levels of protection available.

Multi-Point Locking Systems

A multi-point locking system secures the door at multiple points along the frame, rather than relying on a single lock. With multiple hooks or bolts engaging at the top, middle and bottom of the frame, it spreads the pressure across the entire door, making forced entry much harder.

Anti-Snap, Anti-Drill & Anti-Pick Locks

Standard cylinder locks are a common target for burglars, who often use lock snapping, drilling or picking to gain entry in seconds. That’s why it’s important to choose high-security locks designed to resist these methods.

  • Anti-Snap Locks – Designed to snap at a designated weak point without exposing the internal mechanism, preventing burglars from bypassing the lock.
  • Anti-Drill Locks – Reinforced with hardened pins and plates to stop drill bits from penetrating the cylinder.
  • Anti-Pick Locks – Built with complex pin configurations that make it extremely difficult for intruders to manipulate the mechanism with lock-picking tools.

For the best protection, look for locks with a 3-star TS007 rating or those that are British Standard approved. These have been tested against the most common burglary techniques and provide excellent resistance to tampering.

Reinforced Frames

Intruders may target weak door frames by applying pressure to push or pry them away from the wall, creating enough of a gap to gain entry. Reinforced frames are designed to withstand this kind of force. They’re made from high-density uPVC, steel or composite materials that provide extra strength and durability. Some frames also include steel reinforcement bars or security plates, which help distribute force and make it much harder to kick in or break apart.

Toughened or Laminated Glass Panels

Glass panels in your front door are a great way to brighten up your home and add to your home’s kerb appeal. But if the glass isn’t secure, it can become a weak spot. Standard glass can shatter on impact, making it easy for an intruder to reach through and unlock the door from the inside.

Toughened glass is heat-treated to make it much stronger than regular glass, making it far more difficult to break. Laminated glass goes a step further, with multiple layers and a plastic interlayer that holds the glass together even if it’s smashed. This prevents an intruder from gaining access and adds an extra layer of security to your entrance door.
