Create a curved vista with bespoke bow windows

Elevate your interior spaces with a bow window

A bow window, or compass style window, is essentially a curved bay window. Bow windows usually consist of three or more casement windows carefully engineered together to form a curved, elegant arch.

Commonly confused with traditional bay windows, bow windows form sweeping, curved lines as opposed to the square style of a bay window which typically features sharper angles. While the size, shape, and overall functions remain very similar to bay windows, bow windows can be wrapped around the curves of your property which can form a unique tower-esque shape from your exterior spaces and an enticing nook from the interior.

With gentle curves and sweeping lines, bow windows give your property an understated, elegant look reminiscent of Victorian architecture, regardless of whether your build is historic or modern. Whatever aesthetic you are seeking, our friendly team will be with you every step of the way.

The installation of a bow window combines traditional aesthetics with the perks modern technology can offer, such as double glazing. The team at Majestic Designs prides itself on using the absolute best in energy efficient technology. Our entire range of windows are equipped with A+14 energy rating double glazing and are custom made to your specifications in our state-of-the-art factories in Cheddar, Somerset.

Whether you are upgrading your property with a new bow window or replacing an existing one, you can rest assured our leading FENSA accredited and MTC registered installation teams will work tirelessly towards the best possible result for your build. Majestic Designs are proud to deliver the best in workmanship and quality of materials we can offer to our customers.

    Energy Efficiency

    A+14 energy rated bow windows

All windows are rated using the WER (Window Energy Rating) scale. The scale runs from A-G, with A and above the highest performing. The WER is based on the window’s U-value, solar heat gain value, and overall insulating capacity. The quality of the glazing, frame, and installation all affect the window’s performance.

Bow windows from Majestic Designs feature warm edge thermal spacer bars and argon gas sealed units. This helps them to achieve such high WER scores. They are BBA (British Board of Agrément) accredited for their excellent durability, energy efficiency, and weather resistance.

      Further Information

      Energy-efficient bow windows

Using an alphabetical scale called the Window Energy Rating (WER) scale, our range of windows are rated from A-G, where A is the highest performing and G is the lowest. The rating is based on several different criteria, including:

      • U-value
      • Solar heat gain value
      • Thermal efficiency

Designed to ensure British consumers are choosing the most thermally and energy-efficient windows, the scale is designed to save you money on your energy bills, as well as cut down on energy consumption.

Majestic Designs manufacture our bespoke range of windows right here in Cheddar, in our state-of-the-art factories. Every one of our windows is given an exceptional rating of A+14 on the WER scale.
Although bow windows can feature fixed windows if increased ventilation is not of the utmost concern, most will be engineered with a set of bespoke casement windows for maximum airflow whatever the season.

      Bespoke bow windows

As homes vary in terms of size, age, and aesthetic, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to your windows. While ready-made windows are available in common sizes, the different styles and sizes of the modern home may mean there are obstacles when it comes to installation.

Customising your windows with Majestic Designs to match your personal specifications will result in a truly bespoke finish for you and your home. For exact specifications, it is best to contact our team for details on sizing and pricing.

      Secure bow windows

As well as strengthened double glazing, our range of bespoke windows are engineered with stainless steel friction hinges and the highest possible quality multi-point locking systems. You can rest assured your bow window will keep your property safe and secure from both the British elements and unwelcome intruders.

      Installing your bow window

Majestic Designs has been a fixture in Somerset for more than 19 years. As a proud institution within Cheddar, we only employ locals living in the community – you will find no “cowboy builders” or pushy salespeople, but a close-knit, fully employed FENSA accredited and MTC registered leading installation team whose expert knowledge will be at your disposal from consultation to installation. Majestic Designs’ also hosts a team of in-house customer service representatives, on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Bow windows at Majestic Designs are manufactured with an A+14 rating on the Window Energy Rating (WER) scale. Engineered with warm edge thermal spacer bars and argon gas sealed units for maximum insulation against British weather conditions, your home will benefit from high quality, efficient insulation that will save you the hassle of costly energy bills.

If you are replacing an older window, you should notice the difference immediately when refurbishing your property. A bow window from Majestic Designs retains the aesthetics of your original window by combining classic style with the benefits of modern technology like energy efficiency and improved security.

      Bow windows vs. bay windows

The main difference between a bay window and a bow window is the shape. A bow window features three to six casement windows engineered together to form a graceful curving shape. Bay windows have sharper angles and are often hexagonal, octagonal, or square in shape whereas a bow window will be symmetrical, with a row of casement windows of the same height and width. A bay window will also often protrude further out from your exterior wall than a bow window.

      uPVC bow windows

uPVC (or un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride) is the lightweight, durable alternative to aluminium and timber. Used in the fabrication of windows and doors since the 1960s, uPVC is engineered with resilience and aesthetically pleasing style in mind. With minimal maintenance and a lifespan of 20 years, our high-quality uPVC is resilient to the unpredictable British weather and will not corrode or rust nor warp or deteriorate like traditional timber frames.

      What is a bow window?

A bow window is a set of three to six windows engineered together to form a bay-like curved window. A bow window maximises natural light and airflow in your property, while also increasing the size of your interior spaces and giving the exterior of your build a classic and elegant finish.

When did bay and bow windows become popular?

If you’re considering installing a bow window in your property, it is worth considering the long history of bay and bow windows. A bow window is essentially a style of bay window, which became popular in the 1870s as a way of maximising natural light and airflow in homes owned by the aristocracy. Earlier styles of bay windows can also be seen in both Gothic and Renaissance architecture, where smaller oriel windows were often added to properties for the purpose of worship and private prayer. Oriel windows, another style of bay window, can also be seen in traditional Arabic architecture.

What are the advantages of a bow window?

There are many advantages when considering the installation of a bow window into your property. Whether your build is heritage or contemporary, bow windows can give your property an elegant and understated finish, while also bringing more natural light and airflow into your interior spaces.

A bow window also offers you a wide vista into your exterior space – perfect for the avid gardener who would like to sit and survey the fruits of their labour, or for the reader to enjoy their favourite novels from natural light in the cosiness of a bespoke nook.

      Are bow windows outdated?

Bow windows are a timeless feature of historical architecture and are suitable in both contemporary and heritage properties.

Is a bow window or a bay window better?

As the two styles can aesthetically appear similar, deciding between a bow window and a bay window can prove tricky. At the end of the day, it all comes down to your own personal preferences.

Depending on the aesthetics of your property and your window of choice, a bay window can modernise your property and create an elegant, fresh finish. A classic bow window has a more traditional edge, although both styles can be suitable in heritage and contemporary builds.

If you are looking to increase airflow through your property, then a bow window is ideal. While bay windows are often fixed with maybe one or two windows that open, a bow window can be anywhere between three and six identical casement windows that can be opened and closed.

Do bow windows have to be white?

It is a common misconception when freshening up your property with a new set of windows that they must be white. From the country charm of Chartwell green to the modern and contemporary anthracite grey, our range of bow windows come in a number of different colours to suit the aesthetics of your build and your own taste.
