Gable conservatories

Unlike other period conservatories, the front of the roof doesn’t slope back to the centre but maintains its erect position – much like the end of a house. This feature is often likened visually to a rising sun and as a result Gable Conservatories are also known as Sunburst Conservatories, as well as Pavillion Conservatories, Gable-End Conservatories and Gable-Front Conservatories.

The Chatsworth House Conservatory in Derbyshire, which was constructed between 1836 and 1841, is one of the most well-known Victorian conservatories – the engineering of which would lead to a gradual rise in the popularity of conservatories throughout the UK. The Crystal Palace, arguable the most well-known and short-lived conservatory ever built in the UK, was also built during the Victorian era. Sir Joseph Paxton created the design, and more than 900,000 square feet of glass were used in its construction.
