    Tilt and turn windows

When you’re looking for a versatile window that combines easy operation, dual-purpose opening, and stylish, contemporary good looks, Tilt and Turn windows from Majestic Designs are everything you need. Giving you excellent, safe, tilted ventilation and full inward-opening, Tilt and Turn windows are an ideal and practical choice for any modern home.

All our windows are manufactured in Somerset at our state of the art factories, using only the highest quality uPVC materials together with A+14 energy-rated double glazing. Every Tilt and Turn window will be tailor-made to your own measurements for the ultimate in-home energy efficiency and installed with precision by our experienced team for a perfect fit.

A versatile and practical option for any home

Tilt and Turn windows are an established option for homeowners and have been a common style of window throughout the UK for many decades. First designed and engineered in Germany in the 1950s, the appeal of a Tilt and Turn window, and their ease and flexibility of use, quickly spread across the rest of Europe. And the UK weren’t far behind in welcoming them into their homes where they’ve remained popular since the ’80s.

Today, manufacturing methods and materials have improved with cutting edge technology, but the Tilt and Turn window style and functionality remain largely unchanged, offering both privacy and practicality at the same time. An incredibly versatile window, a Tilt and Turn fits and works brilliantly in almost every room, as well as different styles of home, whether they’re older properties or modern contemporary ones.

Tilt and Turn windows function on an innovative two-way opening system, but with a single, easy to use handle. If you want to let air in for ventilation without opening your window fully, they can be tilted from the top at a 10-15º angle which children will be unable to reach. When you want to open them wide, just close the inward tilt, turn the handle, and open inwards to a full 90°.

When opened wide, Tilt and Turn windows can also be used as a vital fire escape or emergency exit. This is essential for today’s building regulation requirements and can give you peace of mind in case of fire or any other emergency. If you live in an older property which may be susceptible to condensation or damp, the excellent tilted ventilation will help to reduce these problems with a steady airflow. But they’re also an ideal choice if you’re looking for a superior energy and thermally efficient window style.

Choosing Tilt and Turn windows has never been easier. With Majestic Designs’ 19 years’ trading experience and many installations across Somerset, we’ve seen their popularity increase. Designed and manufactured in our state-of-the-art factories, our 10-year guarantee means this modern classic is always matched with high standards, efficiency, and security built-in.

    Energy Efficiency

A+14 energy rated tilt and turn windows

All windows are rated using the WER (Window Energy Rating) scale. The scale runs from A-G, with A and above the highest performing. The WER is based on the window’s U-value, solar heat gain value, and overall insulating capacity. The quality of the glazing, frame, and installation all affect the window’s performance.

Tilt and turn windows from Majestic Designs feature warm edge thermal spacer bars and argon gas sealed units. This helps them to achieve such high WER scores. They are BBA (British Board of Agrément) accredited for their excellent durability, energy efficient, and weather resistance.

Tilt and Turn window glazing and hardware options

Decorative and textured (or ‘obscure’) glass is created by pressing a distinctive pattern into the glass as it’s manufactured. While still allowing light in, textured glass reduces the level of visibility through it, so they can often be used to give you a high level of privacy where you need it most.

And because Tilt and Turn windows are a truly versatile window, capable of being used in a variety of situations, this makes them ideally suited for entrance, hallway, side, bathroom, or bedroom windows while still allowing full or tilted opening for ventilation.

Majestic Designs has a range of options available on all uPVC double glazing and all our textured glass options give you a high level of privacy. Our patterns include:

      • Pelerine
      • Chantilly
      • Charcoal
      • Contora
      • Florielle
      • Everglade
      • Digital
      • Mayflower
      • Minster
      • Oak
      • Taffeta

Whether you want to add privacy to a ground floor bedroom or an upstairs bath or shower room, we have a design of textured glass to suit any Tilt and Turn window. But it’s not just textured glass that can give personality and style to your windows.

Every Tilt and Turn window can be fitted with custom glazing design features and flourishes, including Georgian or astragal bars, or square or diamond leading for a unique finish. You even have the choice of a wide range of window hardware options, including slimline, lockable handles in a choice of styles and colours.

      Energy-efficient Tilt and Turn windows

Energy-efficiency should always be high on your list of priorities when choosing your Tilt and Turn windows. Our range of uPVC Tilt & Turn windows have exceptional insulation credentials, all helping to keep you cooler in the summer and making sure the cold air and rain stay out in the winter while making the use of your central heating system more efficient.

All double glazed windows, including the frames, are given a thermal-efficiency rating from A-G, based on the Window Energy Rating (WER) scale by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). While A++ is the highest performing glass and G is the lowest performing, a rating of ‘C’ is the minimum required rating to pass standard building regulations. The rating given is based on a range of criteria and is decided by:

      • the G-value (the solar heat gain value from the sun coming through the glass)
      • the U-value (the thermal efficiency of the window unit in keeping heat inside)

The scale ensures you get to choose the most thermally and energy-efficient window and glass you can. By doing so you guarantee yourself a warmer home while minimising heat loss, saving money on your fuel bills, and doing your bit to help the environment.

Every window manufactured by Majestic Designs is rated like this and our uPVC windows have been given an exceptional rating of A+14 as standard. We’re also verified for the energy performance, weather resistance, and durability of each window by the BFRC. With our exceptional WER rating and BFRC verification combined, you know you’re getting the highest performing Tilt and Turn windows for your home.

How a Tilt and Turn window works

Tilt and Turn windows give you classic design and exceptional functionality, plus all the benefits of better security, excellent thermal efficiency, and long-term stability and durability. Much of these come down to how a Tilt and Turn window actually works.

Once installed and ready to use, the whole window can be fully opened inwards on its side hinges, much like a standard door, or tilted inwards from the bottom hinges. This dual-purpose opening style is how the Tilt and Turn window gets its name.

With the handle facing downwards, the window is closed, locked, and secure. By turning the handle 90º anti-clockwise to a horizontal position, the window is able to open fully inwards for maximum opening and ventilation.

If, when closed, you turn the handle anti-clockwise by a full 180º to an upright vertical position, the mechanism moves, disconnecting the side hinges while engaging the bottom hinges. This movement allows the window to tilt inwards, giving you an angled opening of 10-15º at the top of the window.

This inward tilt gives you constant ventilation which you can leave without any worry of intrusion or rain coming in – or children or pets getting out.

      FAQs

What is a Tilt and Turn window?

Tilt and Turn is the snappy name for a window that does exactly that – it tilts and it turns. A popular window choice for many homeowners, Tilt and Turn windows are similar to standard casement windows but can be opened in two different ways thanks to the internal mechanism.

While they give every home a functional, practical, and versatile window, they’re also a stylish and contemporary option, perfect for any modern home. As an excellent and safe option when tilted for continuous ventilation and airflow, they have a full opening option that allows for easy cleaning and maintenance.

What’s the advantage of a Tilt and Turn window?

Tilt and Turn windows really do have a lot of advantages over conventional windows which is why they’re so popular. One of the main reasons for this are their flexibility for opening and ventilation. They’re also ideal for smaller rooms or spaces that require privacy as well as ventilation (like the bathroom) and they’re a great option when it comes to cleaning both the inside and outside of the window.

By installing them in the upper floors of homes and buildings, they can be opened fully inwards for quick, safe, and easy cleaning without the use of specialist window cleaners and ladders. Tilt and Turn windows also have a great safety record thanks to the ventilation at the top, well out of reach of children and pets.

Majestic Designs Tilt and Turn windows also feature safety window restrictors as standard. These are designed and fitted to limit the level of inward opening and/or inward tilt of the window, therefore restricting it from being opened fully for added safety.

Can Tilt and Turn windows be used as a door?

Yes. Though most commonly used as a window, the Tilt and Turn model can be resized and repurposed for full-height window spaces which can effectively make them a door. But at the same time, they maintain all the classic hallmarks of a standard Tilt and Turn window, including the full inward opening option and the inward tilt for ventilation.

Often used in living areas for easy access and opening out to a garden or onto a small terrace or patio, or even in upper-level rooms with small Julliet or larger balconies, a full-size Tilt and Turn window gives you a much bigger and uninterrupted view out. This option also highlights just how versatile Tilt and Turn windows can be for any home or apartment.

How secure are Tilt and Turn windows?

This type of window is just as secure as any other lockable uPVC or aluminium double glazed window. But because of the multiple locking points and additional internal mechanisms for both opening options (that regular casement windows don’t have), they deliver an even higher level of security. While being installed with internal beading, all these factors ensure a Tilt and Turn window gives excellent protection for any attempted forced entry from the outside.

What colours do Tilt and Turn windows come in?

Just like other casements, sash, bay, or bow windows available from Majestic Designs, our Tilt and Turn windows are also available in a wide range of colours. Standard white may be the most common choice for uPVC windows, but our selection of colours give you plenty of options to bring your own taste and personality into your home.

Among our range of colour options, you can choose a classic heritage Chartwell Green, a subtle cream, a bold French or Anthracite grey, or even stunning, rich black – all of which are non-fade and non-peel. We also have stunning uPVC woodgrain finishes that give all the good looks of a wooden finish but with none of the extra upkeep or maintenance.

What size Tilt and Turn window do I need?

As with other windows from Majestic Designs, we custom-design and manufacture every window to your home’s specific measurements, giving you a bespoke finish. Every home is different, depending on its age and style. So when you’re replacing your old windows for new, we’ll always visit to take precise measurements and dimensions, ensuring a true and perfect fit to the existing opening. But if you’re looking for a new Tilt and Turn window to bring extra light or ventilation into a darker room or passageway, we can design and create a custom-sized window to suit your needs.

What’s the lifespan of a Tilt and Turn window?

As with all uPVC frames, a double-glazed Tilt and Turn window can give you up to 30 years trouble-free service. uPVC windows have huge benefits when it comes to their lifespan, especially over wooden frames. As a stable, durable, and hard-wearing frame material, uPVC means you can take advantage of incredibly low maintenance. Even coloured uPVC frames can withstand extreme weathers with no discolouration, cracking, fading, or peeling.

Beyond cleaning glass and the interior and exterior framework – not forgetting a lubricating spray of WD40 on the hinges from time to time – uPVC Tilt and Turn windows from Majestic Designs mean you’ll have many years of hassle-free enjoyment.
