Carnival fever in Somerset
As the nights draw in and we start reaching for the heating controls there is an exciting carnival season coming round the corner to brighten up the evenings of residents and visitors to the Somerset region by way of the Somerset County Guys Fawkes Carnival Circuit.
The carnival circuit commences on the 7th November in Bridgwater, each year Bridgwater carnival attracts the largest crowd of the circuit, with upwards of 150,000 visitors taking to the streets joining the largest illuminated parade in the world. The carnival floats or carts can have up to 30,000 light bulbs per float and measure up to 100 feet long. It’s amazing to think that Somerset carnivals have been around since medieval times, linked back to Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder plot, although back in the 17th century the processions were parades of horse-drawn carts and were candlelit.
Anyone who has attended one of the Somerset carnivals will know that they are an ore inspiring sceptical, featuring amazing costumes and dance routines, put on by armatures from various carnival clubs, all hoping to impress the judges and win recognition for their carnival floats. Behind the scenes the carnival clubs spend thousands of man hours creating the floats which include many moving parts, impressive sculptures and very load sound systems blaring out music to the delight of the audience both young and old.
So if you’re looking for a great family friendly evening out in November, it is well worth attending one of the Somerset carnivals. The Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival Association Circuit is perhaps the most popular carnival route in the West Country. It goes through all the major towns in the region such as Bridgwater, Shepton Mallet, Wells, Glastonbury and Weston-super-Mare. Please see our carnival calendar for full details.
