Why uPVC Doors are the Best Choice for Energy Efficiency

uPVC Doors

With energy prices continuing to rise, we’re all feeling the pressure when it comes to heating our homes. While we can’t control those costs, we can make smart changes to improve energy efficiency. One of the most overlooked sources of heat loss is right in front of us—our doors. About 15% of heat loss occurs via doors, with older or poorly insulated doors contributing to even greater losses. That’s a significant amount of warmth (and money) escaping from your home every day.

With the colder months approaching, now is the perfect time to think about replacing yours. But with so many material options available, it can be tough to decide which is best. Among the contenders, uPVC doors consistently stand out for their energy efficiency. So, what makes them so effective?

How Do uPVC Doors Work for Insulation?

uPVC is an excellent insulator because it doesn’t conduct heat easily, meaning it resists the transfer of temperature. This helps to keep warmth inside during the winter and reduce unwanted heat gain during summer. By reducing the need for constant heating or cooling, it results in less energy consumption and lower bills.

The design of uPVC doors makes them even more efficient. Most are built with multiple chambers within the frame which trap pockets of air to significantly improve insulation. Additionally, uPVC doors have weather seals to prevent draughts from slipping through the frame. When combined with double or triple glazing, uPVC doors provide excellent thermal protection.

Together, this makes uPVC one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly door options for homeowners. But how does it compare to other materials like wood or aluminium? Let’s take a closer look.

Wood Doors

Wooden doors have long been admired for their traditional charm, but they aren’t the top performers when it comes to energy efficiency. While wood is naturally insulating, it’s highly vulnerable to weathering. Over time, exposure to moisture and temperature changes can cause the wood to warp, expand or contract, creating gaps around the frame that allow draughts and heat loss. To maintain their insulating properties, wooden doors require regular maintenance like re-sealing and repainting, which can be costly over time.

uPVC doors, however, provide superior insulation without the risk of warping or the need for high maintenance. This makes uPVC a more cost-effective and reliable choice for energy efficiency.

Aluminium Doors

Aluminium doors are prized for their sleek, modern appearance and impressive durability. However, as a naturally conductive material, aluminium transfers heat more easily than uPVC, which can compromise energy efficiency.

To address this, many aluminium doors now include thermal breaks in the frame – a non-conductive barrier positioned between the inner and outer aluminium sections – to help reduce heat transfer. While high-quality thermally broken aluminium doors can perform nearly as well as uPVC in terms of insultation, they typically come at a higher price point.

If your main priorities are aesthetics and durability, aluminium may be a good option. However, uPVC doors generally offer more consistent energy efficiency at a lower upfront cost, making them a better choice for homeowners focused on reducing heat loss and saving on utility bills.
