Which Are Better, Sliding Patio Doors or Bifold Doors?

19th July 2019 |

If you watch any of the home makeover shows on TV or get any home improvement magazines, there is one thing you’ll notice. One of the most popular additions to a home is large glass doors that open onto the garden.

It’s hardly surprising they’re popular. These huge expanses of glass look stunning. They let the light flood in and they blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors.

If you’re thinking of adding or replacing large glass doors in your home, there are two options. The first is the bifold door. The second is the sliding patio door. Which one is right for you and your home? Here’s our guide.

Bifold doors

Bifold doors are like a glass wall that disappears when they’re opened up. Every section folds back on the next, giving a beautifully wide opening, making indoor outdoor living possible.

They are the ultimate in glamorous living and a real design statement – there’s a reason most of the features you see in magazines and on TV use bifold doors. They open up a home and make indoor outdoor living a reality in a way no other door can.

The doors are very practical too. It’s possible to only open one section of the door if you need to – you don’t have to open the entire door every time. This is ideal for when you just want to quickly pop into the garden, for example.

Sliding patio doors

As the name suggests, sliding patio doors slide open. When they’re open, the glass panes stack neatly, one behind the other.

One of the biggest advantages of sliding patio doors over bifold doors is that you can have bigger glass panes on a sliding door.

What this means is that when the doors are closed you get better views of the outside because you have more glass and less frame aesthetics. This is important because for most of the year, your doors will be closed because it’s too cold, wet or windy to have them open.

Sliding doors also take up less space when they’re open. Because the panes slide one behind the other, they don’t take up valuable space inside or outside.

Whichever you choose

Whether you choose a sliding patio door or a bifold door, there are several things that will be the same.

They will offer state-of-the-art security to keep your home and loved ones safe. They will be the highest in energy efficient at A+14, so you’ll keep the warmth in and the cold out. They’ll be easy to maintain so there’ll be no DIY or maintenance involved. You’ll be able to choose from a wide range of colours so your door frames can blend in or stand out. You’ll be able to configure your doors so they will open and close in the way you want.

You can see examples of both bifold doors and sliding patio doors at our window and door showroom in Cheddar. Our experienced sales people will be happy to talk you through the options and answer any questions with no obligation and no pressure.

When you choose Majestic Designs, you can also be sure your doors will be manufactured by skilled craftspeople in our factories in Cheddar and installed by our own fully employed expert installers. You’ll be left with a home that’s transformed.
