What Should I Look For in Good Double Glazing?
Buying double glazing for your home is a considered investment. You’ll want to be sure you’ve made the right decision. In previous posts we looked at what you should look for in a double glazing company and the accreditations a double glazing company should have. In this post we’ll look at what you should look for in the windows themselves.
Here are some of the things you consider.
Check the energy efficiency of your double glazing
One of the first things you need to do is find out about the energy efficiency of your double glazing. Windows have thermal efficiency ratings. In order to comply with building regulations, windows have to meet certain minimum standards. They must have a Window Energy Rating of Band C or better or a maximum U-value of 1.6 W/m2K.
Check that your windows meet this minimum standard by asking about the BFRC rating. BFRC (the British Fenestration Rating Council) assesses the performance of windows and doors and gives them a rating between A++ and E. Genuine BFRC rated products are labelled with a small official sticker on the inside of the frame and often a large rainbow label on the surface of the window or door. This gives you clear, visible proof that it will perform as promised.
You may find it useful to know that Majestic Designs’ double glazing has a rating of A+14 as standard.
Check the security of your double glazing
Another point to check is the security credentials of your double glazing.
Like thermal efficiency, windows have to meet certain security standards by law. Ground floor, basement and other easily accessible windows (including easily accessible rooflights) should meet the requirements of PAS 24:2012.
In practice, this means you’re looking for features such as multipoint locking and internal beading. Internal beading refers to the way the frames have been glazed. Internally beaded windows have been glazed from the inside. When they’re externally glazed, it’s much easier for burglars to remove the bead and glass and gain entry to your home.
Again, these are just the minimum requirements. You might want to upgrade your security and good double glazing will have this option. If security is a concern, choosing Secured by Design-accredited windows is a good idea. Secured by Design is an official police security initiative and accredited products meet even more demanding standards than the minimum.
Check the versatility of your double glazing
You might not want anything special from your double glazing. Standard white casement windows might give you everything you need. But one of the signs of good double glazing is the versatility it offers. So even if you don’t want to choose any of the options, it’s worthwhile checking what’s on offer. Good double glazing should be available in a range of colours. There should be a range of glazing options that you can customise to suit your needs. For example, if you’d like to add Georgian bars, you should be able to add them in whatever configuration you like. You should be able to have any shape you want, including arched, pointed or circular.
Ask questions about your double glazing
Your double glazing company should be proud of the double glazing products they sell. They should be happy to answer any questions you have and be able to give you all the information and proof you need. This is because they’ll have nothing to hide.
