Stable Doors For Country Kitchens

Nothing does country charm better than a magnificent set of traditional stable doors. Divided horizontally, the bottom half of a stable door can be securely fastened and closed while the top half remains open. This allows for improved ventilation and an influx of natural light into your property while still remaining secure.
A precursor to the more modern screen door, stable doors have a vast and interesting history. Also referred to as a Dutch door or a half-door, the iconic stable door is rooted in traditional, agricultural living.
At Majestic Designs, we offer a variety of bespoke, custom made uPVC and composite stable doors that can deliver airflow, light and thermal efficiency to your property.
The History of Stable Doors
Stable doors were originally engineered to keep small children safe in the home while still allowing air to flow through the property. Rising to prominence in the early 17th century, stable doors were popular in the Netherlands and were known as Dutch doors. These Dutch doors were ideal for keeping animals such as wandering chickens outside the home. Stable doors could also be used in barns and stables for locking in farm animals.
Revered for its practicality and flexibility, the iconic Dutch door became an enduring choice in agricultural properties and eventually spread across Europe to Britain and Ireland. Stable doors were also brought to the United States when the Dutch immigrated and settled in droves along the East Coast of North America.
In Ireland, stable doors became increasingly popular after a tax on windows and glass was introduced in the 19th century. Irish farmers living in rural areas opted for smaller windows and stable doors as a way of avoiding the extra tax, while also allowing ventilation and natural light into their cottages. It is said that this is where the term “daylight robbery” came from! Stable doors are now an integral part of the Irish countryside, as well as the iconic historical cottages. To this day, those cottages still dot Ireland’s rolling hills.
Ventilation and Security
Stable doors are engineered with four hinges instead of the normal three. Designed with innovation and practicality in mind, stable doors are the perfect addition to your property if improving ventilation is at the forefront of your mind.
Installing a stable door in your home allows you to have the best of both worlds. Stable doors provide an effective barrier to the world, keeping young children and domestic pets safe inside without compromising on natural light or airflow.
Country Charm
Poised for revival in the modern home, stable doors are iconic of a different era. Many, if not all of the original stable doors still seen today were installed in homes prior to the 1880s. They are reminiscent of sunnier, simpler days when people lived off the land. If you are wanting to add oodles of country charm to your property, then the addition of a stable door is the perfect solution.
