How to Secure Your Home with High-Quality uPVC Windows

Your windows do more than brighten up your home and let in fresh air. They’re also one of the main things that help keep your home safe. But if they’re old, damaged or easy to force open, they could be doing the opposite.
It’s a common oversight. Most of us are quick to check the locks on the front door or set a timer for the hallway light, but forget that around a third of burglaries in the UK happen through a window. Whether you’re at home or away, knowing your windows are secure gives you that added sense of security and peace of mind.
uPVC windows are built for security. And while the material itself is sturdy, long-lasting and won’t warp or rot over time, there are some clever design features that modern UPVC windows offer to reinforce their already secure nature.
Here’s how high-quality uPVC windows can help you feel safer at home, day and night.
What Features Make uPVC Windows Secure?
Multi-Point Locking Systems
Unlike older windows with a single central lock, uPVC windows feature multi-point locking systems that engage at multiple points around the frame, evenly distributing pressure. This means that any attempts to pry or force the window open would require overcoming resistance at several points simultaneously – a difficult, noisy and time-consuming task for intruders.
Internally Beaded Frames
Many older windows were designed with beading on the outside of the frame to hold the glass in place. While this worked at the time, it meant intruders could remove the glass and gain entry. Internally beaded frames solve this problem by securing the glass from the inside of the frame. This makes it much harder for anyone to tamper with or break into your home.
Double Glazed Glass
Double glazing offers exceptional resistance against forced entry. With two panes of glass working together, the added thickness makes it much harder to break than single-pane alternatives. Also, the insulating gas between the panes acts as a shock absorber, reducing the likelihood of shattering from force. Some uPVC windows can even feature toughened or laminated double glazing for further protection.
Lockable Window Handles
Older windows often relied on latches to hold the window shut, but they didn’t offer much in terms of security. Modern uPVC windows, however, are equipped with key-operated handles as standard. When locked, these handles prevent the window from being opened, even if the glass is broken. Aside from security, having key-operated locks on upper-floor windows reduces the risk of children opening them accidentally.
Hinge-Side Brackets
The hinge side of a window is a common target for intruders, as it can be vulnerable to prying attempts by inserting a tool like a crowbar between the sash (the part of the window that opens) and the frame. Hinge-side brackets are a simple but highly effective fix for this issue. When the window is closed and locked, these brackets anchor the sash securely to the frame, reinforcing the hinge side and preventing it from being levered out of place.
