Company News

Since the 1980s, uPVC has become the go-to material for window and door frames across homes in the UK. And it’s easy to see why—uPVC is designed to be long-lasting, weather-resistant and low maintenance, making it an ideal choice for homeowners looking for windows and doors that can stand the test of time without the constant need for upkeep.

But what happens when it’s finally time to replace your uPVC windows? The good news is that, rather than ending up in a landfill, uPVC can be recycled, allowing the material to be given a second life. By recycling uPVC, we can help reduce the impact on our environment while turning those old windows into new, useful products.

What is uPVC?

uPVC, or unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride, is a type of plastic that has been specially engineered for strength and durability. It’s made through a process called polymerisation, where vinyl chloride monomers are combined to form PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride).

In the case of uPVC, plasticisers—chemicals usually added to make plastics more flexible—are intentionally left out of the process. This gives uPVC its distinctive rigidity and resilience, making it perfect for structural applications like windows and doors.

Why Recycle uPVC?

While uPVC is incredibly durable, even the toughest materials eventually need replacing. When that time comes, uPVC recycling ensures that it doesn’t end up as unnecessary landfill waste. Unlike materials like wood, uPVC doesn’t degrade naturally, meaning old windows could sit in landfills for a staggering 500 to 1,000 years.

Fortunately, uPVC can be recycled up to 10 times. Instead of contributing to waste, your old uPVC windows can be repurposed into a variety of products, from pipes and flooring to garden furniture—and even new window frames. And because uPVC is made from non-renewable resources like oil, it’s important that we maximise the use of the material already in circulation rather than relying on the production of new plastic.

What is the Recycling Process for uPVC Windows?

  1. Old uPVC window frames arrive at recycling facilities, where they undergo an initial inspection to assess their condition and ensure they are suitable for recycling.
  2. Any non-uPVC materials, such as glass and general debris, are carefully removed and the uPVC is sorted by colour to streamline the recycling process.
  3. The purified uPVC is then shredded into small pieces and transformed into tiny granules or pellets.
  4. These granules are then melted down and refined to be reintroduced into the manufacturing process and moulded into new uPVC products.

FAQs

How do I dispose of old uPVC windows?

If you’re replacing your windows with new ones from Majestic Designs, we handle the entire disposal process for you. When we install your new uPVC windows, we send the old uPVC frames to recycling facilities where they are responsibly processed.

Are all uPVC windows recyclable?

Most uPVC windows are recyclable, but only the highest-quality components are selected for recycling. Windows or parts with extensive damage may be excluded from the process to ensure that the recycled material remains of high quality and suitable for creating new products. Non-recyclable parts, however, are responsibly disposed of in accordance with environmental guidelines.

How does uPVC window recycling work?

The recycling process for uPVC windows involves collecting and inspecting the old frames, removing non-uPVC materials like glass and metal and shredding the uPVC into granules or pellets. These recycled materials are then melted down and reintroduced into manufacturing to create new products, including new uPVC windows.

Are recycled uPVC windows as durable as new ones?

Yes, recycled uPVC windows can be just as durable and high-quality as new windows. Recycled uPVC material goes through a refining process that restores its integrity, so when it’s formed into new window frames, it performs just as well as if it was newly processed.
