The Benefits of Renovating Period Properties with New Windows

Georgian Bar Windows

If you’re lucky enough to own a period property, you’ll know just how special it is. Homes with traditional features and original character have a charm that’s hard to beat. But keeping your property looking its best while making it comfortable and efficient to live in can be a challenge – especially if you’re working with old, single-glazed windows or timber frames that have seen better days.

Whether you’ve lived in your home for years or have recently moved into a period property that needs a bit of TLC, replacing old windows with modern alternatives can make a huge difference. And while the idea of upgrading your windows might feel daunting, especially when you want to preserve your home’s older-style features, the benefits are well worth it. From keeping your home warmer and drier to making it look better than ever, new windows can enhance your home in ways you might not expect.

Enhancing the Appearance of Your Period Home

Older windows can cause all sorts of issues, especially if they’ve been in place for decades. Timber frames, in particular, can warp, crack or rot, and peeling paint is never a good look. While keeping your home’s original features is important, failing to update your old windows can end up causing more harm than good.

Fortunately, you can now get high-quality uPVC and aluminium windows that replicate traditional designs beautifully. And with so many options to choose from, it’s easier than ever to find a style that suits your property’s aesthetic.

At Majestic Designs, we offer a range of options to suit every style of property, from elegant mock sash windows to stylish casement designs. And because modern windows come in a variety of colours and finishes – including realistic woodgrain effects – you can get the look you want without the ongoing maintenance.

Improved Insulation and Heat Retention

One of the biggest issues with older windows is poor insulation. If your windows are draughty or let in moisture, your home’s overall comfort can take a real hit. And if you’re noticing higher energy bills, your old windows could be part of the problem.

Draughts and condensation are the most common signs of poor insulation. If you want to check if your windows are letting in cold air, try the candle test. Simply light a candle and move it around the edges of your window frame. If the flame flickers, you’ve got a draught.

At Majestic Designs, we manufacture all our windows with double glazing as standard. Unlike single-glazed windows, double glazing offers much better insulation by creating an air gap that prevents heat from escaping. The two panes make it harder for cold air to get in and warm air to get out, resulting in a warmer, drier and more comfortable home all year round.

Double glazing is particularly useful in older homes where retaining heat can be a challenge. And because our windows are energy-rated A+14 for superior insulation, they can make a noticeable difference to your energy bills.

Easy Maintenance and Durability

If you’ve got traditional timber windows, you’re probably familiar with the constant upkeep they require. From sanding and repainting to fixing rotten frames, keeping them looking good can be a lot of work.

Modern windows, on the other hand, are made from durable materials like uPVC and aluminium that require little to no maintenance. Simply wipe them down with soapy water from time to time, and they’ll stay looking their best. And because uPVC and aluminium are so tough and resilient, your new windows will provide excellent security and protection from the elements.

Better Security for Your Home

Modern windows are built with security in mind. Traditional wooden frames can weaken over time, making them easier to force open. And if you’ve still got single glazing, your windows are more likely to shatter if someone tries to break in.

At Majestic Designs, our uPVC and aluminium windows come with multi-point locking systems as standard. These locks secure the window at multiple points along the frame, making it much harder for intruders to gain entry. Internal beading also ensures that the glass can’t be removed from the outside, adding an extra layer of security.
