How Energy Efficient are Aluminium Bifold Doors?

Aluminium Bifold Door

Aluminium bifold doors have become a firm favourite among homeowners looking to bring more natural light into their home and create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. By folding neatly back on themselves, these doors can open up an entire wall, transforming how you use your kitchen, living room or extension.

But while bifold doors certainly look impressive, many homeowners wonder whether all that glass and metal will leave their home feeling draughty in winter. The good news is that modern aluminium bifold doors are engineered to deliver excellent thermal performance, often exceeding UK building regulations. Here, we take a closer look at how energy efficient aluminium bifold doors really are.

What are Bifold Doors?

Bifold doors consist of multiple glass panels connected within an aluminium or uPVC frame. Rather than swinging open like a traditional door, they concertina neatly to one side or both sides of the opening. This clever design allows you to open up a large section of your home to the garden, patio or terrace.

During warmer months, bifold doors are perfect for entertaining. They allow guests to move freely between inside and outside, making your living space feel much larger. When closed, the expansive glazing still floods your room with natural light, helping your home feel bright and airy even on greyer days.

U-Values and Energy Efficiency

When choosing bifold doors, one of the most important figures to look for is the U-value. This measures how effectively a door (or any building element) prevents heat from escaping. U-value is expressed in watts per square metre per degree Kelvin (W/m²K), and a lower U-value indicates better insulation properties. In simple terms, the lower the number, the better the door is at keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer.

Under current UK building regulations (Part L), replacement doors with more than 60% glazing must achieve a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better. For new build homes, the target U-value is 1.2 W/m²K. Quality aluminium bifold doors from reputable manufacturers comfortably meet these standards, with some achieving U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K when specified with triple glazing.

When comparing products, make sure you are looking at the overall U-value of the complete door system, including the frame. Some manufacturers quote only the centre pane U-value, which will always be lower than the overall figure.

Thermal Break Technology

Aluminium is naturally a good conductor of heat, which might suggest it would make a poor choice for external doors. However, modern aluminium bifold doors are fitted with thermal break barriers, which resist thermal transfer from the outside face of the doors through to the living area inside.

A polyamide thermal break separates the aluminium frame into interior and exterior pieces, joining them together with a less conductive material. This break acts as a thermal barrier, reducing the flow of energy through the aluminium. The result is a door that combines the strength and slim sightlines of aluminium with excellent insulation.

Combined with high performance double or triple glazing, argon gas filling between the panes, and low emissivity (Low-E) glass coatings, modern aluminium bifold doors deliver thermal efficiency that rivals or exceeds other door materials.

Aluminium Bifold DoorsWill Bifold Doors Make My Home Cold or Draughty?

This is one of the most common concerns homeowners have, and it is understandable. After all, bifold doors cover a much larger opening than a standard door or window. However, when installed correctly, modern bifold doors are not draughty and will not make your room cold.

Quality bifold doors feature robust weather seals and gaskets that create an airtight barrier when closed. Poor installation can create gaps and misalignments that lead to draughts and leaks. This is why choosing an experienced, qualified installer is just as important as selecting a quality product.

At Majestic Designs, all our installations are carried out by our own team of full time, FENSA registered fitters. We never use subcontractors, which means we can guarantee the quality of both the product and the installation.

Security

Beyond energy efficiency, security is a key consideration for any external door. Modern aluminium bifold doors are designed with this in mind.

Multi point locking systems secure the door at several points along the frame, making them extremely difficult to force open. Many designs also allow you to leave the door slightly ajar for ventilation while the lock remains engaged, giving you airflow without compromising security.

Internal beading is another important security feature. This plastic strip holds the glass panes in place from the inside of the frame, rather than the outside. An intruder cannot remove the glass from outside without breaking it, which acts as a strong deterrent.
