How Do You Stop Condensation on Aluminium Bi-Fold Doors?

12th March 2024 |

Aluminium Doors

With spring approaching, the fluctuating temperatures invite a familiar companion for many homeowners – condensation. While small amounts of condensation are normal due to the cool outside air and the warmer indoor environment, excessive moisture found between the glass panes or on the inner surfaces of doors and windows can result from poor quality seals and heightened humidity.
Aluminium Bifold Doors

Condensation on aluminium bi-fold doors is more than just a minor nuisance, it can lead to serious consequences affecting the aesthetics and functionality of your doors. Condensation build-up can eventually result in severe damage to your home, such as mould and rot, if not properly addressed.

Bi-fold doors are quickly becoming one of the most popular home additions on the market, and for good reason. They maximise natural lighting and seamlessly connect your home with your garden when fully open, creating a living space that’s ideal for summer entertaining. Specifically, aluminium bi-fold doors offer sleek, slimline frames, durable construction and an array of colour options to suit your preferences.

One weakness aluminium does have is that it’s a highly conductive material, meaning it changes temperature quickly to match its environment. If your home has poorly insulated aluminium door frames, it loses heat when the temperature outside drops which leads to problems with condensation.

For many homeowners with outdated aluminium frames, this is a common issue. The best fix? Switch to thermally broken aluminium bi-fold doors. A thermal break uses modern technology to create a gap between the frame components, acting like a barrier between the cold air outside and the warm air inside. With thermally broken aluminium doors, it tackles the problem of aluminium’s fast heat loss by providing maximum thermal efficiency.

It’s important to note that condensation on the outside of your unit means that your energy efficient door and high specification glass are working together to keep the heat in and the cold out. However, if you’re experiencing persistent interior condensation, we’ve outlined some solutions to further minimise and prevent it:

Improve Ventilation – Everyday activities like cooking, showering and drying laundry contribute to excess moisture. Inadequate ventilation traps this moisture, leading to poor air quality, condensation and potential mould growth. Improve the airflow in your home by using extractor fans, especially in bathrooms and kitchens, opening windows or using a dehumidifier.
Replace Single Glazing with Double Glazing – Single-pane doors and windows are prone to condensation during colder months due to their inability to warm up the glass. Upgrading to double or triple glazing adds an internal layer of glass that is insulated from external temperatures. This internal glass layer warms up with your room, effectively reducing condensation. This will also keep the room warmer, allowing the air to retain more moisture.
Upgrade Insulation – Cloudy or foggy glass typically indicates seal failure in double or triple-pane units. When these seals deteriorate, moisture can enter the space between the panes, resulting in condensation and a blurred view. Resolving this issue typically requires professional intervention, often involving a replacement of the affected glass. Seals naturally wear out over time due to various factors like climate, sunlight, humidity, pressure, impact, or ageing. However, regular cleaning and maintenance can help to prevent future breakage or cracking.
Clear and Protect – A simple and immediate solution for condensation is to wipe down your bi-fold doors with a soft cloth or squeegee. This not only restores visibility but prevents potential water damage and issues with damp and mould in the long term. While this can’t eliminate moisture in your home completely, it’s an easy way to remove condensation manually each morning.
