Excellent Endurance
When testing the durability of windows and doors, the BBA carry out tests that are designed to replicate the natural life of the product. The windows are exposed to fluctuations in temperature to assess their heat and cold resistance. Exposure to extremes of -30°C and between 40°C and 1500°C ensures the windows are more than capable of withstanding the British climate.
The windows are also exposed to UV radiation. A fluorescent tube and xenon arc are used to mimic the sun’s rays. During the process the windows are monitored for discolouration and deterioration. Thermal cycling helps to gauge the reaction of the windows over a specified time period.
The windows are sprayed with a natural salt spray. This tests their resistance to corrosion from the elements. The windows are placed in a salt spray chamber where they are exposed to acids, alkalis and other chemical agents.
Thermal performance assessment
The window’s U-value is calculated using a guarded hot box. A guarded hot box is designed for testing windows, doors and wall panels. Thermal conductivity and resistance is tested using heat flow meters which provide an accurate and realistic energy rating.
The reflectivity and insulating properties of the window are also tested. In this modern world, it is increasingly important to reduce our carbon footprint. Producing windows that are energy efficient helps our environment, thus protecting our children’s futures.
Mechanical testing
Every part of the window system is tested for strength and functionality. Weights are hung off the window frames to test the shear strength and tensile properties of the window. Bond strength, compressive strength and flexural properties are tested using state of the art machines and equipment.
Tests are also carried out to assess security, operation and impact resistance.
Protection from the elements
The BBA perform tests for water tightness, wind resistance, air permeability and UV resistance. Severe weather conditions are simulated in a special laboratory to expose the window to the most extreme conditions possible. These tests are designed to ensure our modern windows are top class and provide a secure barrier to any external factors.
