The project brief – what did the Hanson’s want from their new home improvements?

Mr and Mrs Hanson had bought Highgate Cottage in Worth, Near Wells in 2012. They were attracted to the beautiful surroundings and historic character of the property – they wanted to enhance the aesthetics on the outside and improve performance on the inside.

Key priorities therefore included the installation of thermally efficient windows that would keep guests warm even during Winter. They were also looking to replace the doors with stylish alternatives that guests would be pleased to enter! Throughout the process they were keen to maintain the authentic look of the stone-built Somerset property.

After being impressed with examples of Majestic’s previous work and their diverse range of colour and style options, they were happy for the Somerset based company to install a set of stylish new cream uPVC windows and black composite doors. How did Majestic enhance the character of Highgate Cottage?

Majestic’s team of professionals installed double glazed A+14 energy rated windows. Modern building regulations require a minimum Window Energy Rating (WER) being ‘C’, the new double glazing greatly exceeded regulations for maximum thermal performance. They will significantly insulate the individual rooms of the property, making them ideal for a Bed & Breakfast.

Majestic’s experience in the industry meant they knew exactly how Mr and Mrs Hanson could retain the character of the cottage without compromising on performance – in addition to high-performing materials, they suggested that the couple choose additional detailing that would enhance aesthetics. The new single astragal bars are a simple touch that will appeal to visitors looking to stay in a traditional Somerset property.

The impressive new black composite doors and incorporated glazing details adds a touch of elegance to the property. Composites are naturally insulating and robust, meaning the homeowners and guests can enjoy updated entrances for decades, not just years. What’s more, composite doors do not warp or corrode and the couple can therefore spend more time entertaining their guests or relaxing, rather than spending precious time fussing with sanding and repainting.
