Are Casement Windows Secure?

Secure casement windows.
Securing your property is a primary concern for most homeowners, who seek to keep both their possessions and family safe. Windows and doors are often the main entry point for burglars and other unwelcome visitors, which is why security should be at the forefront of your mind when it comes to upgrading or refurbishing your property.
Choosing high-quality, secure windows will ensure your property is not only kept warm and dry throughout the year, but also well-protected against potential intruders. A hugely popular option for homeowners across the UK are casement windows, an incredibly versatile window that works beautifully in almost all types and styles of home.
If you’ve been considering installing casement windows in your property, you may naturally be questioning whether they are secure. In this article, we’ll provide the answer, but first, let’s explain what casement windows are for those who don’t know.
What Are Casement Windows?
Casement windows are attached to their frame by hinges on the side, top or bottom, allowing them to swing open like a door. They’re usually fitted either singly or in pairs, and you can choose to leave them plain for a modern look with an unobstructed view out, or add glazing bars for a more traditional appearance.
Interestingly, the word ‘casement’ actually refers to the opening part of the window itself, which is why you’ll sometimes see ‘fixed casements’. These are non-opening sections that look like casements but don’t actually open. They’re often used to create larger window configurations where you might want light but not necessarily ventilation in every section.
Are Casement Windows Easy to Break Into?
The short answer is no. High-quality casement windows are designed to be remarkably difficult to break into. When manufactured well and properly installed, they offer excellent security through a combination of features that work together to deter intruders.
- Multi-point locking systems – Modern casement windows lock at several points around the frame when you turn the handle, not just at one central point like older windows. This distributes the force evenly and makes it virtually impossible for someone to force the window open by applying pressure to weak spots.
- Internal beading – Quality casement windows have their glazing secured from inside the property, meaning the glass can only be removed from within your home.
- Double or triple glazing – Multiple panes of glass create a much stronger barrier than single glazing. Any attempt to break through would surely attract your attention or the attention of your neighbours.
- Compression sealing – When closed, the window sash is pulled tightly into the frame by the locking mechanism, creating a secure fit with no gaps that could be exploited.
- Security hardware – High-quality handles, locks and hinges are designed to resist tampering. Many come with additional features like key-operated locks for extra peace of mind on ground-floor windows.
