Majestic energy performance ratings for windows

When it’s time to replace your windows, energy efficiency is one of the most important factors to consider. Lots of heat can be lost through your windows, costing you money on increased heating bills. Understanding window energy ratings (WER) can help you to make an informed decision when choosing your new windows.

What is window energy rating?

The British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC), part of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) provide certification which highlights the energy efficiency of windows. Windows are independently tested and measured on:

Heat retention capacity
Air leakage through the windows’ perimeter
Sunlight transmission
Glazing thickness
Frame construction

The BFRC analyse all the results and grade the windows on a scale of A+ – G, with A+ being one of the most energy efficient. All windows tested for WER are given a certificate with a rainbow sticker showing the grading the window received. Each window is tested separately and given a rating based on the combined performance of the glass and the frame.

The importance of U-values

U-values measure a windows’ insulating capacity. The lower the rating, the better the insulation. U-values measure how quickly heat is transferred through the window. This measurement is compared across the whole window structure to give an accurate result. If windows are poorly fitted, this can have a negative impact on the windows’ U-value.

Replacement windows and new build installations must now achieve a U-value of 1.6 W/m²K or a WER of at least C to comply with Building Regulations requirements.

A+14 rated windows
