From the 1st July 2013, CE Marking became a legal requirement for all windows and doors. CE Marked windows and doors give both the installer and homeowner reassurance that the products are of a consistently high standard. What is CE Marking?
The initials CE are an abbreviation of the French phrase ‘Conformité Européenne’. This directly translates as European Conformity. When a product is CE Marked, it can be sold across Europe.
To obtain CE Marking, the manufacturer makes a declaration that the product complies with the essential requirements of the relevant EU (European Union) criteria. These include health, safety, and environmental protection legislation, and technical and performance requirements.
Since CE Marking became obligatory in the fenestration industry, standards have risen thus benefitting all people connected to the industry. This standardisation helps to provide guidelines which ensure high quality across the sector.
Types of CE testing
To attain CE Marking, windows and doors must undergo the following tests:
- Weather tightness
- Dangerous substance emissions
- Impact resistance (glazed section and frame)
- Load bearing capacity of safety restrictor/catch
- Emergency exit compliance
- Acoustic performance
These rigorous testing procedures guarantee that all windows and doors sold across Europe meet the same exacting conditions.
